(a) The Name “Bishan”:
The name “Bishan” comes from the Mandarin term “Peck San” (碧山), which means “pavilions on the green.” This reflects the town’s blend of natural elements and modern living.

(b) Bishan’s Transformation:
Bishan’s journey from a former cemetery to a bustling residential estate began in the 1970s and 1980s. Despite initial concerns about living on a former burial ground, Bishan quickly became one of Singapore’s most popular and vibrant neighborhoods.

(c) HDB Design Innovation:
Bishan was the first town in Singapore to break away from the “brutalist” design of earlier public housing, opting instead for a more distinctive architectural style, including pavilion-inspired roofs that symbolize its name.

(d) San Teng MRT Station:
The Bishan MRT Station was originally named “San Teng,” after the cemetery that once occupied the area. It was later renamed Bishan MRT Station to better reflect the name of the developing housing estate.

(e) Naturalized River at Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park:
Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park features a naturalized river that was once a concrete canal. This successful “de-concretization” project transformed the canal into a beautiful meandering river that’s now home to wildlife and serves as a recreational spot.

(f) Bishan Sports Centre:
Bishan Sports Centre has hosted numerous international sporting events, including the Asian Youth Games, Youth Olympic Games, and the SEA Games, making it an important venue for sports in Singapore.

(g) Kong Meng San Phor Kark See Monastery:
