Hougang (后港), located in the northeast region of Singapore, is part of the Northeast CDC. It is well-connected by the Hougang and Kovan MRT stations on the North-East Line, as well as major expressways like the Kallang-Paya Lebar Expressway (KPE) and Central Expressway (CTE).

Hougang was traditionally a Teochew-speaking area, with roots as a rural village filled with pig farms and plantations.

Low Thia Khiang was synonymous with Hougang (Hougang MP from 1991 to 2011).

(a) Historical Significance:
The name “Hougang” means “back of the river” in Teochew, a reflection of its location behind Sungei Serangoon. Historically, Hougang was home to a large Teochew-speaking community, and its heritage is still evident in its food culture and landmarks.

(b) Largest HDB Town:
Hougang holds the distinction of being the largest HDB town by land area in Singapore, making it a significant and densely populated residential hub.

(c) First McDonald’s in a Housing Estate:
In 1984, Hougang became the first HDB estate to host a McDonald’s outlet, a significant milestone in Singapore’s fast-food culture. The outlet remains operational today, a testament to its enduring popularity.

(d) Crocodile Farms:
Once home to multiple crocodile farms, including the famous Tan Moh Hong Reptile Skin and Crocodile Farm, Hougang had a unique agricultural past. These farms remained in operation until 2012, adding a quirky historical touch to the area.

(e) Hougang Heritage Trail:
Hougang boasts its own heritage trail, which showcases historical sites and stories related to the area’s past, including its significance during military conflicts and tales of pirates. The trail is divided into three thematic routes: Landmarks of Hougang, Institutions of Service, and Architectural Gems.

(f) Hands of the Opposition Party:
Since 1991, Hougang has been a stronghold of Singapore’s Workers’ Party (WP), making it a key political landmark. The WP first won the Hougang Single Member Constituency (SMC) in that year and has consistently held onto it in subsequent elections.

(g) Kampong Spirit:
Despite modernization, Hougang retains a sense of traditional kampong (village) spirit, particularly with nearby Kampong Lorong Buangkok, the last remaining kampong in mainland Singapore, offering a glimpse into the country’s past way of life.
