(a) Historical Origins:
The area was originally home to the Orang Seletar, indigenous “Sea People” who lived on boats along Singapore’s northern coast. The name “Woodlands” came from its densely forested appearance when viewed from Johor across the Straits.

(b) Gateway to Malaysia:

  • Before 1924: People used ferries to cross the Straits of Johor since 1845
  • 1924: Completion of the Woodlands Causeway
  • Present day: Serves as one of the busiest border crossings in the world

(c) Early Development:
The first HDB flats in Woodlands New Town were constructed in 1972 in northern Marsiling, marking the beginning of the area’s transformation from rural woodland to modern township.
