7 INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT PUNGGOL HDB ESTATE
(a) Ancient Origins:
Punggol is one of Singapore’s oldest inhabited areas, dating back to almost 200 years before the British arrival. The name “Punggol” is believed to mean “hurling sticks at the branches of fruit trees” in Malay.
(b) Fishing Village Roots:
Punggol was originally a fishing village and rural district, with early settlers predominantly being Malays engaged in fishing. It later became known for poultry and pig farming as well.
(c) Historic Matilda House:
Punggol is home to one of Singapore’s oldest houses, the Matilda House. Built by Irish lawyer Alexander William Cashin as a gift for his wife, it served as a weekend retreat and boasted amenities like stables and tennis courts.
(d) Waterway Development:
As part of the town’s redevelopment, a 4.2km long man-made waterway was created to connect two freshwater reservoirs, Sungei Serangoon and Sungei Punggol.
