(a) The Name:
“Bukit Panjang” translates to “Long Hill” in Malay, referring to the ridge that once stretched from Upper Bukit Timah Road to Bukit Panjang Road.
This natural landform influenced early development and settlements in the area.
(b) Rural to Urban Transformation:
Up until the 1990s, Bukit Panjang was known for its rural charm, filled with fruit orchards, vegetable gardens, and poultry farms. Due to its contribution to the island’s food supply, it was even nicknamed Singapore’s “vegetable basket.”
The area underwent significant development with the Bukit Panjang New Town project, transforming into a modern residential estate while preserving its rustic heritage.
(c) Railway Heritage :
Bukit Panjang was once a stop on the Federated Malay States Railway, marking its historical importance in Singapore’s early transportation network. The area’s agrarian roots and key role in food production left a lasting legacy.
(d) Nature at its Doorstep:
Bukit Panjang is uniquely positioned near two nature reserves and a large nature park. The estate borders the Bukit Timah Nature Reserve and is close to the Central Catchment Nature Reserve, offering residents easy access to rich biodiversity and outdoor recreational activities.
